Music speaks a universal language, crossing cultural boundaries and bringing listeners together through shared experiences. English musician Matt Finucane embraces that international spirit with “Dead Artform”, a feedback-driven new single that challenges the state of modern creativity ahead of his forthcoming album, “Ruination”.
Blending post-punk intensity with jagged guitars, restless bass and driving drums from Barney Guy, “Dead Artform” confronts the growing influence of commercial interests and artificial intelligence on artistic expression. Its sardonic refrain, “this is a dead artform/as dead as me”, questions whether music is losing its purpose, while the track’s raw energy suggests precisely the opposite.
Drawing on the experimental legacy of artists such as David Bowie, Mark E. Smith and Lou Reed, Finucane has spent more than two decades developing his own distinctive musical identity. His sound carries the rebellious spirit of British alternative rock, yet his themes extend far beyond national borders.
“Dead Artform” explores questions relevant to musicians and listeners everywhere: can creativity survive in an increasingly commercialised world, and what happens when technology threatens to overshadow artistic expression? Through distorted guitars, restless rhythms and dark humour, Finucane transforms these concerns into a compelling alternative-rock statement.
His forthcoming album, “Ruination”, promises to venture further into what he describes as “the neo-goth, post-punk darklands”. Beneath its darker sound lie universal human experiences, including “jealousy, despair, redemption… And you. In the end, this album is about YOU.”
Following his 2024 EP, “Bang Bang Exorcism”, released through Eyeless Records, Finucane continues to champion musical independence over commercial formulas and online popularity.
With “Dead Artform”, he demonstrates that music rooted in a particular tradition can resonate with audiences everywhere. Its message is clear: genuine creativity needs no borders, and the spirit of alternative rock remains very much alive.
“Dead Artform” is out now. “Ruination” is scheduled for digital release on October 30, with a physical edition to follow through Eyeless Records. Download and stream the single at https://mattfinucane.bandcamp.com/track/dead-artform
