The duality of love
On the debut EP ‘Pilot’, Planks explores the moments where joy and loss are intertwined. The lyrics move within the tension between love’s intimacy and the awareness of its fragility – always with the understanding that beauty, too, may have an expiry date.
Musically, Planks describes his universe as “twilight folk-rock”: a sound rooted in the folk-rock tradition with a distinctly British edge and acoustic warmth, yet carrying a glowing intensity beneath the surface.
On the title track, Planks sings of a relationship where the joy feels real, yet an inevitable crossroads looms on the horizon. The same dual mood is explored in ‘Hey Love’ – a conversational love song where two voices take turns to speak. With layered harmonies and gentle acoustic touches, the song nods to The Eagles while reinforcing the EP’s recurring theme: the transience of love.
Stones swagger against the bricks in the wall
On ‘Mr. Well-informed’, Planks turns his gaze outward. A dirty Stones riff and a dark middle section frame a critical protest song about those who swallow whatever they’re served, convincing themselves it’s the truth. Written as a dialogue between the self and a know-it-all counterpart intent on imposing his version of reality, the song – with working-class attitude and a sharp British edge – reminds the listener of the need to question, to see things from different perspectives, and not just be another brick in the wall.
Chapters of the night
The first single ‘Things Happen At Night’, released on 3 October, closes the EP. The song is rooted in Planks’ own experiences of nightlife in Odense, where intoxication could serve as both an escape and a trap. With an intense hook, distorted organ and a vocal that at times carries a huskiness reminiscent of Sam Fender, the track captures the emptiness that arises when the party and the high begin to fade.
About Planks
Planks is the alias of 32-year-old Mikkel Smidt Diget, who lives in Bogense. The nickname dates back to his youth in sport, but today it is music that takes centre stage. Drawing inspiration from Fleetwood Mac, The Tallest Man On Earth and Sam Fender, Planks crafts a sound that moves between acoustic intimacy and electric edge – always with storytelling at its core.
