Malu Pierini steps into the spotlight of yesteryear on her new single ‘Pourquoi’

With her new single and accompanying music video, the Danish-Corsican chanteuse lets the ghosts of old stages and long-forgotten dreams drift into the present, offering a cinematic prelude to her debut album arriving later this month.

On January 30, Malu Pierini unveils her long-awaited debut album ’Libera Me’ – ten songs that braid her family’s history with threads of French elegance, Nordic melancholy, and modern soul. From childhood summers on Corsican shores to her grandparents’ whirlwind love story in the neon-lit Paris of the 1960s, and finally to the soft grey rain of Copenhagen, ’Libera Me’ unfolds like a cherished photo album, where memory and the present moment live side by side.

This Friday brings the album’s guiding single, ‘Pourquoi’ (French for “why?”).

“The song is about my grandmother, who travelled to Paris as a young dancer, drawn in by the spotlight and a sweeping romance,” Pierini shares, ”But slowly she realised life was not the dream she had imagined. ’Pourquoi’ is, on one level, about giving everything to a love that does not return the same devotion – and about how I’ve found myself repeating her story in my own blind corners and patterns. Yet the song is also deeply existential: it explores how the smallest choices ripple across time, eventually carrying me – sixty years later – onto a stage just as she once stood.”

Sonically, ‘Pourquoi’ drifts in like a postcard from Paris: intimate, wistful, and soft at the edges, with a vocal delivery steeped in both drama and vulnerability. Hints of Édith Piaf flicker through the melody, yet set in a modern universe where sensitivity meets theatrical flair.

The story’s light and dark, its sorrow and joy, come together in the music video, filmed in Pigalle by photographer Julie Montauk.

Malu Pierini is a rising talent on the Nordic music scene. Her soul-washed, velvet-warm, Mediterranean-tinted pop has earned national radio rotation and praise from leading Danish tastemakers Soundvenue and GAFFA, while also catching the attention of international platforms such as COLORS (DE), DLSO (IT), FIZZY Magazine (DE), and Ones to Watch (US).

The release of ’Libera Me’ will be marked by exclusive live shows in both Copenhagen and Aarhus, Denmark.

‘Pourquoi’ and the forthcoming album will be released independently via Universal Music Group.
