The Copenhagen-based alt-pop artist insists on having her own voice in a system that constantly pressures you to fit in. Her new single ’the perfect selfie’ captures the quiet burden many young people grow up with and challenges the idea that perfection is something to strive for.
Out today, the track arrives ahead of Mercedess’ upcoming album ’I’d love to be a star, but I’m tired as fuck’, set for release later this year.
How do you take the perfect selfie when perfect is never enough? Mercedess turns the question inward and outward, reintroducing herself with renewed confidence as an artist balancing bold expression with a hidden fragility. In an extroverted world, Mercedess makes music for the days when you feel like wearing sunglasses indoors.
“Self-staging is the new normal – a consequence of how we exist and how we see ourselves and each other. In the pursuit of recognition, you might take 200 selfies to get the perfect shot, only to end up posting nothing at all. ‘the perfect selfie’ tells a personal yet universal story about expectations, fractured self-esteem and a distorted sense of reality,” she says.
Built on intimate guitars and mesmerizing vocal layers, ‘the perfect selfie’ unfolds into a dark, bass-heavy chorus that captures the pressure of being seen online, while it also expands the sonic universe of her forthcoming album, written and co-produced by Mercedess.
“I needed full creative control to get to the core of what I want to express as an artist – everything I dream about and long for, but often feel too insecure or held back by anxiety to pursue. I know I’m not alone in feeling this way. Everyone shines like a star in their own way, but it’s easy to become overwhelmed, tired, and discouraged. That’s the eternal human conflict,” Mercedess explains about the thoughts of her sophomore album ‘I’d love to be a star, but I’m tired as fuck’.
Mercedess first introduced her soulful, vibrant and dreamy universe in 2022 with her debut album ‘CASA FANTASIA’. Tracks like ‘Back to Business’ and ‘Summer’s Already Gone’ earned international attention from platforms such as COLORS and Ones To Watch, alongside praise from Danish outlets including Soundvenue and GAFFA. Her single ‘Obvious’ was also named “Song of the Week” on national radio station P3.
The new single and upcoming album are released independently through Virgin Records Nordics.
