Though her opening phrasings on ‘Cold Belief’ call to mind the soundtrack to the iconic 007 films, NAYAH soon moves back into more familiar territory. With a clubby RnB melancholy, she tells the story of stubbornly holding on to the belief that love will prevail in the end. But at the same time, it also contains the realisation that, sadly, that’s not always the case.
There’s a timeless diva quality about the vocal performance that we haven’t heard from NAYAH before. A seductive Hollywood aesthetic that, with its elegant phrasings, both seduces and creates a magnificent mystery.
The producers are experienced forces like Sebastian Owens and Marcus Elkjer, while legendary Mads Nilsson (Alphabeat) has mixed the song. Together they have masterfully managed to mix a melancholic evergreen mood with an ultra-modern club feel that also gets your feet moving.
What’s bad for your heart…
“… is good for your art”, laughs Nayah Dahari and explains further about the background of the song: “It’s about going back to someone, even though you know there’s probably no future in it”, the 28-year-old singer elaborates.
“Unrequited love has always been the driving force in my songwriting. The main character of ‘Cold Belief’ shouldn’t be seen as a victim, but I think many people – especially women – will find its theme relatable,” she says, referring to the stanzas in the chorus:
Before we go to sleep // I need your honesty // Oh I guess it’s right // Bottom line // Love is gonna make you blind
Mini biography
In 2015 NAYAH was voted ‘Inevitable of the Week’ on Denmark’s most prestigious radio station with the song ‘Bad Bitches’ – something most Danish artists only dream of. In 2021, she reinvented herself musically, swapping Danish lyrics for English. With musical role models like Kaytranada, Brandy, Aaliyah and Kelela, she moved in a much more RnB-inspired direction with her regular producer team Sebastian Owens and Marcus Elkjer.
